The ACL (Ambition Champion Lead) will lead a team of staff within school, to provide a champion for every disadvantaged child, to solve ‘life’ barriers to learning and engagement.  The overarching aim being to close the gaps between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The Lead of our exciting new initiative will be a non-teaching member of the School’s Extended Leadership Team.

The important member of the team will be responsible for strategic planning and operation management of the Ambition Champion Programme.  The role of the ACL is to ensure that every disadvantaged child has an advocate so those who may otherwise struggle in silence, or who may be juggling an array of responsibilities, have someone to champion them.

They support students and their families in the following areas:

  • School-related issues
  • Relationship issues
  • Financial issues
  • To work in partnership with teaching staff to support learning in line with the national curriculum, codes of practice and school policies and procedures
  • To work with Ambition Champions to support the learning, educational progress and inclusion of disadvantaged pupils to enable them to reaching expected attainment alongside non-disadvantaged peers
  • To assist the Headteacher and the Leadership Team in the overall management and development of the school

Skills required

  • An ability to manage the schools’ ambition champions on a daily basis by inspiring, supporting and holding them to account
  • To be resourceful, tenacious and well organized
  • Ability to use and analyse data
  • Ability to hold people to account
  • Knowledge of external agencies
  • To organise, manage and track the impact of intervention strategies
  • Identification of intervention strategies
  • ICT competency
  • Line management experience
  • Ability to communicate with all stakeholders
  • To have up-to-date knowledge of external agencies

Key Responsibilities

  • To be proactive in developing the programme to suit the needs of the school
  • To ensure data and tracking systems are in place and kept up-to-date
  • To have an overview of disadvantaged students’ attendance across the whole school
  • To ensure student “profiles” (including talents and strengths) are in place and kept up-to-date
  • To ensure that all reporting mechanisms are in place including in-school and to TKAT
  • To ensure smooth communication between the Ambition Champions and relevant staff
  • To monitor, evaluate and report on the implementation of the Ambition Champions process
  • To ensure that ambition champions:
    • make meaningful regular contact with each disadvantaged pupil and/or their families.  Have up-to-date knowledge of each disadvantaged pupil’s state of well being
    • have up-to-date knowledge of the barriers to engagement for each disadvantaged pupil
    • have a broad understanding of the curriculum
    • work with the school and other agencies to identify resources and strategies to tackle barriers
    • deliver any training needed
    • have up-to-date knowledge of enhanced safeguarding and school safeguarding procedures
    • conduct and reviewed One Planning for relevant pupils

Success Criteria

Disadvantaged pupils with Ambition Champions, over time and relevant to the context, will have:

  • Rapidly improving attendance and/or attendance that is at or above the national average for all non-disadvantaged pupils.
  • Rapidly improving or good pupil engagement in relation to their peers.
  • Rapidly improving outcomes or outcomes that are at or above the national average for all non-disadvantaged pupils.
  • Increased uptake to opportunities offered by the school outside of the classroom including raised career aspirations
  • Increased communication between school and home with rapid intervention or referral processes, as required
