Here at Hylands School we promote reading as an essential part of school life. We very much believe that reading enhances our students’ ability to succeed in their education and evidence suggests that those students who read for 20 minutes per day will be far more successful in their GCSEs than those students who do not read. Students who read frequently enjoy a richer vocabulary which enables them to access the higher level of reading required for all exams, no matter the subject.

Reading also provides abundant opportunities for students to strengthen their study skills, improve their mental health and learn about the world outside of their experiences. In order to support and challenge students with their reading, we will be promoting various initiatives within school. Years 7-9 will be using the Accelerated Reader Programme and all year groups now have 15 minutes daily reading for pleasure within tutor time in addition to time spent reading in lessons. During assemblies teachers and students are sharing passages from their favourite books or poems and reading competitions will be run throughout the year. We are fully committed to creating avid and successful readers and are creating a culture of a love of books.

We would like to work in partnership with parents and guardians to ensure that reading is also promoted and supported in the home environment. We would greatly appreciate your support in ensuring that your child arrives at school with a reading book every day and that reading also takes place at home every evening.

Book donations

Given the current situation, books being returned to the library are being quarantined for 72 hours. This means that the library stock is depleting faster than usual and so we would very much appreciate reading book donations to the school.

We would be really grateful if you could sort out any unwanted books you have at home and are willing to donate to the school. They can be suitable for any age, from year 7 through to sixth form, and of any genre.

Please send any books in with your child where a box will be available in tutor rooms for collection. If you have a large number of books to donate, please email jennifer.harold@hylands-tkat.org and I will arrange a convenient time for you to drop these off to the school.

Many thanks in advance for your support.
