Hylands Pupils Excel on Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions

295FFC37 A8C7 41CD 804B A07EDAAB9D1BTwo weeks ago, 43 dedicated pupils from Years 9–11 at Hylands set off on their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) expeditions, facing soaring July temperatures and unexpected obstacles with grit and determination.

The Silver group embarked on their practice weekend, beginning at the school and camping for two nights. With rucksacks full of supplies and two days’ worth of food, students were tested on their planning, responsibility, and resilience. The group—comprising both first-time participants and those progressing from Bronze—encountered challenges such as a missing bridge, requiring quick thinking and teamwork to safely navigate a ditch. Despite the demanding conditions, all students persevered and are now well prepared for their assessed expedition in Sussex next weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bronze participants completed their assessed expedition, walking for two days and camping overnight. The intense heat added to the challenge, but pupils rose to the occasion, showcasing strong navigation, collaboration, and endurance. Throughout the weekend, they demonstrated what it means to be respectfulresponsible, and resilient—supporting one another and embodying the Hylands values. Their efforts earned them the expedition section of the Bronze award, with volunteering, skills, and physical activity sections remaining to complete the full qualification.

A huge well done to all involved—your adaptability, perseverance, and teamwork were truly commendable!
