Spotlight on Success: Students Go Backstage at the Civic Theatre
Students from Hylands School recently enjoyed an exclusive and inspiring trip to the Civic Theatre, Chelmsford, gaining unprecedented access to the inner workings of a professional arts venue and demonstrating impeccable conduct throughout the day.
Behind the Curtain: A Look at Theatre Life
The day began with a comprehensive backstage tour, offering students a fascinating glimpse into the mechanics of a live production. Highlights of the tour included:
· The Warehouse: Where the magic begins seeing props being made, stored, and prepared for the stage.
· Technical Hubs: Exploring the sophisticated lighting and sound rooms.
· The Green Room: Experiencing the space where actors prepare and relax before and during performances.
· On and Backstage: Students were able to walk the main stage and see the theatre from the perspective of the performers.
Career Insights and Creative Challenge
Following the tour, the students had the valuable opportunity to meet key members of the theatre staff, including the Marketing Team and the Director of the theatre. This session allowed students to ask insightful questions about career progression and life working within the arts and creative industries.
The practical challenge of the day involved the students working in teams to put together a marketing campaign for the upcoming chilling production, The Woman in Black. Each team delivered a compelling presentation and received constructive feedback from the theatre professionals, honing their skills in communication and creative strategy.
The visit concluded on a high note when the Director, clearly impressed by the students' enthusiasm, invited them to perform. The students jumped at the chance to sing a song from their own school production, Oliver showcasing their talents right on the Civic Theatre stage!
The feedback received from the theatre staff regarding the students’ behaviour was exceptional. The students showed impeccable Hyland's habits, of being respectful and being responsible leaving a fantastic impression on their hosts.
"We have such wonderful, polite students and when I heard Hylands were coming I was so happy," commented one member of the theatre staff.
The accompanying staff member added: "I am immensely proud of them all and it was a pleasure to take them. They truly represented the school brilliantly."
This trip was an invaluable experience, blending creative exploration with real-world career learning, and serving as a testament to the talent and excellent conduct of Hylands students.
