Modern Foreign Languages
The modern foreign languages department at Hylands aims to provide opportunities for students to acquire languages and intercultural understanding. We expose students to a broad, culturally minded curriculum which kindles curiosity, promotes diversity and an appreciation of other cultures. We look to inspire a love of languages through a variety of online and authentic resources to improve linguistic ability, world perspective and confidence.
The department is dedicated to ensuring that all students achieve expected progress and the skills acquired in learning a language and as a result are more open to new experiences and have a further profound understanding of their own language and culture.

GCSE French: Communicating with Confidence
Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages Department. Our goal is to move beyond the classroom, transforming students into capable, real-world communicators.
We believe that language is best learnt through meaningful communication, not just memorising lists of words. Our curriculum is built on a "chunking" methodology that prioritises:
-
Meaningful Context: We focus on how language is actually used in the real world.
-
Intensive Retrieval: Frequent practice of high-frequency language "chunks" ensures deep learning.
-
Early Sophistication: We introduce complex, impressive structures early on, recycling them often so they become second nature.
-
The Journey to Independence: We provide heavy support at the start, gradually removing it as students reach mastery and become independent speakers and writers.
We are committed to "scaffolding" every student's journey. Every GCSE French student is provided with a comprehensive digital and physical toolkit:
-
Sentence Builder Packs: Structured guides to help students craft complex responses.
-
Knowledge Organisers: Clear, one-page summaries of essential grammar and themes.
-
Vocabulary Books: Dedicated logs for tracking progress and key terminology.
